Overview

Come and try a winter walking and snow shoe holiday in the Pyrenees led by Indie Lyndale a qualified International Mountain Leader. She has many years experience in taking clients mountain walking and snow shoeing in the Pyrenees, Alps and Britain. She will host your week together with her partner Theo who is an excellent cook The Pyrenees offers a wonderful combination of sun and snow perfect for a varied itinerary of snow shoe walks taking in frozen lakes and snow covered forests, unforgettable views, a walk up the stunning Carança Gorge and a visit to the hot springs. Snow shoeing is easy to learn and available to people of all ages. You do not have to have any experience and it is well within the physical capabilities of most people. It allows you to venture deep into the winter environment and experience the wonders of virgin snow and the silence of snow covered forests which you will never forget. Our centre is a converted 19th century iron forge located at 600m with spectacular views of Pic Canigou (2750m) and the valleys below. The centre is set at the end of its own drive and surrounded by its own grounds with the village Vernet le Bain only 20mins walk away with local bars, cafés and restaurants. Accommodation is simple and comfortable with full board including excellent home made three course evening meals and wine, using local produce.

Common itinerary

Saturday: Arrive airport (either Gerona, Barcelona or Toulouse) pick up and transfer to our centre Mas Forge. Settle in then meet early evening for welcome drinks and the first of the wonderful meals which are served at Mas Forge.
Sunday: Walk in local area to acclimatise, the views of Canigou are fabulous from any of the forested valley sides.
Monday: Snow shoe walk up towards Pic Carlit (3000m) through magical forests and arriving at a impressive frozen lake high in the mountains. Finish the day at the relaxing thermal baths which nestle in the mountainside. (optional as there is a charge to get in)
Tuesday: We will start the day with a short visit to Prades market; a colourful market offering all sorts of local produce followed by a walk around the Carança Gorge. This is a dramatic limestone gorge which is only accessible by traversing the cliff sides on rock ledges and crossing from side to side via suspension bridges.
Wednesday: Day off. We always leave Wednesday free as the days can be quite tiring but we can advise on a range of active or relaxing excursions you can undertake yourself. This can include a day of skiing if arranged in advance.
Thursday and Friday: Two snow shoe days or mountain walking exploring the various mountain and forest trails in the area. Specific walks are decided on nearer the time dependent on weather but there are always wonderful walks available whatever the weather.
